Legacy RefWorks: RefGrabIt

Using RefGrabIt to Import Web Page Information

Some times research leads to web pages that have valuable information.  RefGrabIt simplifies the process of getting the information that describes the web page into RefWorks.

  1. Once RefGrabIt has been installed and attached to your browser, find a web page of interest.
  2. Click on the "RefGrabIt" button that should appear in the browser's shortcuts.
  3. An intermediate RefWorks page will display, giving you the option to import the citation.  Click on the "Import" button.
  4. Take note of any additional information that RefWorks may bring in because of DOIs, ISBNs, etc. that may have displayed on the page grabbed by RefGrabIt.

Using RefGrabIt with Library Databases

RefGrab-It can also be used to "grab" the bibliographic citation from any database that makes use of any of the following identifiers:

  • ISBN (book identifier)
  • PubMed ID
  • DOI (digital object identifier, usually used with individual journal articles)
  • COinS (ContextObjects in Spans -- special coding embedded in the web page that RefWorks will read)

With any of these identifiers, RefGrab-It will take that identified, query the appropriate database, and use that field-tagged data to import the citation into RefWorks.  This technique can be used when you are limited to a manual export (export a text file and import that text file to RefWorks) from a database .  Two databases where you might find this technique to be useful are:
