El Decameron de Boccaccio

This volume from 1450 is an illustrated manuscript of Giovanni Bocaccio's collection of tales told by a group sheltering to avoid the Plague.

Apocalypsis Johannis

This 1460 codex is xylographic, meaning the pages were stamped from a hard-carved block of wood.  The pages were stamped in brown ink, and the images are hand-colored.  The arrangement of the text and images resembles an early version of the comic book.
