Google vs. Library catalog

As researchers, you are working hard to create new scholarship.  So, it is important that the information you use for your work is accurate and based on solid research.

Exercise:

• Break into your small groups
• Pick a composer
• Perform a search in Google and in OneSearch
• Write on the board 2-3 pros and cons for each option.

Databases supply a significant amount of resources from background information in encyclopedias to streaming music and videos.  You can gather credible and scholarly materials to use by regularly exploring these rich sources.

Exercise:

• Break into your small groups
• Pick a database
• Search a composer name in your database 
• Answer these questions on the board
  • What kind of information about your composer can you find in this resource?
  • Does the information found on your composer point you to any other resources?
