Legacy RefWorks: Manual Creation

Steps to Add Citations Manually

Occasionally you may need to add citations to RefWorks by keying in the appropriate information. To do so, do the following:

  1. Click the "New Reference" button at the top of the display.
  2. Select a potential output style to View Fields Used By Your Selected Output Style.  These fields will automatically display once you have selected the style -- optional.
  3. Select the folder or folders where you want to store your reference -- optional.  Note:  If you don't place the citation in a folder, by default it will go to the "References Note in a Folder" location.
  4. Under Ref Type, select the reference type you want to add (book, dissertation, journal article, magazine article, web page, etc.).  The fields appropriate for each reference type will display when the reference type is selected.
  5. Determine if your reference is for a Print or Electronic source in the Source Type drop-down.  Some styles ask that this inforamtion be provded in the bibliography.
  6. Select the Output Language.  The Output Language should reflect the language the reference is entered or typed in within your database.  By making a selection from the Output Language drop-down, RefWorks may apply special handling and formatting for a bibliography which is important in multi-language bibliographies.
  7. After you select the reference type and source type, click in each field and key in the appropriate information.
  8. When you've finished entering information, click the "Save Reference" button to save the entry; you can also click "Save & Add New" if you have another citation to key in.
  9. If you have data for other fields, click on the "Additional Fields" link at the bottom of the default display.
  10. If you want to see the notes associated with the fields selected to display for the particular style, click on the "Additional Comments About..." link at the bottom of the default display.
