Steps for Importing Records into RefWorks from Scopus -- Direct Export

Scopus is an excellent interdisciplinary database for high quality resources. Use these steps top place citations from Scopus into RefWorks. 

  1. Select “Electronic Resources” from the “Books, Articles & More” menu and look for and click on the link to “Scopus”.
  2. Search a topic of interest.
  3. From the search results page, mark a few records by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each citation.
  4. Click on the "Output" button.
  5. Select "Export" as the desired output type.
  6. Select "RefWorks direct export" as the export format.
  7. Select your preferred citation format.  The "Complete Format" is the format recommended by RefWorks.
  8. Click the "Export" button.
  9. Log in to RefWorks -- if necessary.  Note:  You can bypass logging in to RefWorks by providing your RefWorks login information in your Scopus "My Profile" account and performing Scopus searches when logged into your Scopus account.  Additionally, by providing this information in your account, Scopus will be able to display a RefWorks icon next to records in Scopus that you have already imported into your RefWorks account from Scopus.
  10. Your records should appear in the "Last Imported Folder".
  11. When references are first imported, that is the best time to edit them and associate them with the appropriate subject folders.

    Steps for Importing Records into RefWorks from Scopus -- Manual Export

    Note:  If you have an ISI ResearchSoft product (Reference Manager, EndNote or ProCite) installed on your computer the following directions may not work. An ISI Helper application may have been installed on your computer that is automatically called when you select the Export button in Scopus.  It will not allow you to save the information to text.

    1. Select “Electronic Resources” from the “Books, Articles & More” menu and look for and click on the link to “Scopus”.
    2. Search a topic of interest.
    3. From the search results page, mark a few records by clicking on the checkbox to the left of each citation.
    4. Click on the "Output" button.
    5. Select "Export" as the desired output type.
    6. Select "RIS Format (Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote)" as the export format.
    7. Select your preferred citation format.  The "Complete Format" is the format recommended by RefWorks.
    8. Click the "Export" button.
    9. You will be prompted to save a file called scopus.ris to your computer; click the "Save" option.
    10. Log in to RefWorks -- if appropriate.
    11. From the "References" menu, select "Import".
    12. Select "RIS Format" as the data source and "RIS Format" as the database.
    13. Browse to find the text file you saved on your computer, and click on the "Import" button.
    14. Your records should appear in the "Last Imported Folder".
    15. When references are first imported, that is the best time to edit them and associate them with the appropriate subject folders.
