Citing Business Resources & Creating Bibliographies

What information do you need to cite a book or an article? Here is what you need:

• Author or editor
• Article or book title
• Publication date
• For a book: the name of the publisher and location
• For an article: source, volume/issue and page
• For article title, capitalize only the first word of the title and any proper nouns

For items found electronically, you will also need:

• Name of database
• DOI if available

 Keep in mind

• Use the & instead of and with multiple authors
• Author last name comes first, then initials
• Italicize journal and book titles, not articles

Basic format: Author lastname, A.A. & Author, B.B. (date/year). book title. publisher location: publisher.

Example: Wong, K. L. & Scott B. R. (2011). Business for the common good : a Christian vision for the marketplace. Downers Grove, Ill. : IVP Academic.

Basic format: Author lastname, A.A., Author, B.B. & Author C.C. (year of publication). article title. periodical title, volume(issue), page numbers.

Example: Brown, S., Marinan, J., & Partridge, M. A. (2020). The moderating effect of servant leadership on transformational, transactional, authentic, and charismatic leadership. Journal of International Business Disciplines, 15(2), 67–86.

Journal article with DOI from database: Rodnyansky, A., & Darmouni, R. (2017). The effects of quantitative easing on bank lending behavior. Review of Financial Studies, 30(11), 3858–3887. https://doi.org/10.1093/rfs/hhx063

Basic format: Author lastname, first initial. (pub. date). article title. Publication name, publication date, edition if available, p. page numbers. (use pp. for more than one page)

Example: Phillips, M. M. (2001, April 27). Bush team turns its frustration over economy upon Europeans. Wall Street Journal, Eastern ed, p. A4.
