Evaluating Information: How to Recognize the Difference Between Popular, Trade and Scholarly Journals

If you are still having trouble determining whether a particular title is scholarly or popular, one great resource is Ulrichsweb - Global Serials Directory.

Search for the journal title name and in the details for the journal, there will be a field called "Content Type."  You can check there to see whether a journal is Academic/Scholarly, Trade or Consumer (how they describe "popular" publications).

You can also see whether a particular journal is peer-reviewed (sometimes called "refereed" journals) by noting the "referee" shirt next to the title of a journal:
