Using the "Request" Service to Place Holds on Loaned material and Retrieve Items from Storage
If an item you require from BU Libraries collections is on loan to another borrower or is stored in the O'Grady Offsite Storage Facility, you can use the electronic "Request" form to place a hold* on loaned items or retrieve titles from O'Grady.
Let's use the following hypothetical to review the steps for initiating an item "Request":
Scenario: You are researching Charles Spurgeon's Calvinist tendencies and need to access a volume of the periodical The Sword and the Trowel, which he published.
- Find the title in OneSearch
- Note: the "Library has" field in the record indicates that O'Grady holds the complete run of this magazine (published during Spurgeon's lifetime) and the "Status" field for O'Grady indicates "Request Item."
- Locate and click the
button (top and left of screen). - You will be navigated to a login screen.
- Use your Baylor email ID and password as your login.
- For magazines and journals, specify the volume, issues and/or years you require in the "Comments/Additional Information" box (below password box) , then click the "Submit" button.
- You will be navigated to a screen with the words "Item Selection Form" in the top left of the screen.
- Find and click the "Request Selected Item" button.
Depending upon the time of the request, items should normally be retrieved and available for pick up on the same day or following morning (during regular semesters).
*A hold is like a reservation on a loaned item. Initiating a hold places you in a queu (behind the current borrower and anyone else who may have placed a hold on the item before you), to borrow the title. Placement of the hold prevents the current borrower from renewing their loan of the title and ensures that the title will be flagged and held for you at circulation when it is returned.
