Systematic Review Training and Working Sessions

Systematic Review Training

This multi-part online training will guide you through the steps of conducting a systematic review.  It will take you 45-90 minutes to go through the videos, activities, and assessments for each of the 8 required modules takes between 45 and 90 minutes.  A badge will be given to those who receive at least 80% on the assessments in the required modules.  The systematic working sessions are meant to complement this training.

Format: lecture, active learning, directed learning; asynchronous

(Introduction and) Planning Working Session

This session will focus on the planning step of conducting a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  The first 30 minutes will be spent introducing systematic and other types of literature reviews and the steps (PIECES) of conducting a review.  During the remainder of the time, participants will develop their research questions and conduct preliminary searches in preparation for conducing a systematic review

Format:  lecture, directed learning; in-person, synchronous online 

Identifying Working Session

This session will focus on the identifying step of conducting a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  During this time, participants will identify databases to use for their review and translate their research questions to search strategies.

Format:  directed learning; in-person, synchronous online 

Evaluating Working Session

This session will focus on the evaluating step of conducting a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  During this time, participants will select the tools they plan to use for the review, choose their inclusion and exclusion criteria, and identify the checklists they will use for critical appraisal.

Collecting and Combining Data Working Session

This session will focus on the collecting and combining step of conducting a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  During this time, participants will identify data elements needed to answer their research question and begin to develop the forms to collect these data.

Explaining the Synthesis and Analysis Working Session

This session will focus on the explaining step of conducting a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  During this time, participants will identify the techniques they plan to use to analyze their data and begin designing preliminary tables and graphs.

Format:  directed learning; in-person, synchronous online 

Summarizing Working Session

This session will focus on the summarizing step of conducting a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  During this time, participants will identify their primary audience, outline their summary, and construct their PRISMA diagram.

Format:  directed learning; in-person, synchronous online 

EPPI-Reviewer Working Session

This session will focus on using EPPI-Reviewer to conduct a systematic review and is designed to complement the systematic review training canvas course.  During this time, participants will set up their review in EPPI-Reviewer, import citations, create work distributions, and customize coding.  This working session will be geared towards the leads of the systematic review teams, but all members of the team should have EPPI-Reviewer accounts prior to the session.
